The ARRT Board of Trustees recently approved an update to the Sonography Content Outline.
- In 2016, ARRT participated in a consensus conference on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs). The purpose of this conference was to update the 2003 standards for use by clinical, academic, and manufacturing related sonographic industries. The product of the conference is a document entitled "Industry Standards for the Prevention of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Sonography."
- This document, formally endorsed by ARRT, can be accessed and downloaded at no cost from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) both support the document (as indicated on page 4 of the document). The document, specific to sonography, expands on the methods currently included in the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
- At the Society for Diagnostic Medical Sonography conference in September of 2019, the ARRT was invited to join the Grand Challenge Design Summit on WRMSDs. A wide range of professionals from across the sonography discipline formed an alliance aimed at making change on a large scale in sonography practices to stop WRMSDs in Sonography.
- In response to the attention on WRMSDs, the Sonography Content Outline was updated. In the Patient Care section, equipment, work environment, and sonographer body mechanics were added under 'operator ergonomics.'
