Updated Mammography Content Specifications

ARRT periodically conducts a job analysis to make certain that the certification examination content specifications and clinical requirements are comprehensive, accurate, and fair. ARRT, with the help of the professional community, reviews the certification documents every five years. The ARRT Board of Trustees recently approved changes to the following document, which goes into effect on September 1, 2025.

OVERVIEW OF MAJOR CHANGES TO THE CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Additional content was added to Patient Care including patient education about the process for receiving results and more detail about inherent and social risk factors.
  • TRAM flap and latissimus dorsi flap were removed from Patient Care.
  • Synthesized imaging and troubleshooting PACS were added under digital acquisition, display and informatics in Image Production.
  • Breast density reporting requirements was added under MQSA regulations in Image Production.
  • EQUIP and patient related artifacts were added under mammographic technique and image evaluation in Image Production.
  • Additional details were added to patient preparation under interventional procedures in Procedures.
  • Sentinel node mapping, cyst aspiration, and fine needle aspiration biopsy were removed from Procedures.
  • The number of questions in each section was adjusted and the total number of scored questions remains the same. The number of pilots increased from 25 to 30 questions.
